The shape of Purple

RAL 4006 Purple
The assignment

Develop a 3-Dimensional shape that embodies the properties
of the color purple, taking its appearance into consideration in
different light environments and times of the day.
Purple and its controversy

Purple is a controversial color given its cultural past and the two
primary colors it consists of. The RAL 4006 purple contains
almost equal parts of red and blue with a hint of green.

The color Red is associated with anger, passion, danger and
fire. Blue on the other hand, is a calm, quiet and
peaceful color which is associated with water. Those
attributes oppose each other in every way imaginable.
This also shows in the shape we have created.
Analysis of the color, its appearance and effect on the viewer

The color purple combines the attributes of two strong polarizing
primary colors. Purple used to be associated with either priests
or kings and therefor had a powerful and wealthy looking effect
on people who could not afford a rare color or dye like purple.
Even nowadays, purple still has a rather intimidating effect on
the viewer.

Sketches -

We wanted to incorporate the mixture of the two mentioned
primary colors, as well as the intimidating effect the color has
on the person looking at the finished product.

So, we chose to give the model a certain edginess and pointed
tips. Furthermore the vertical shape and the single faces are
smooth and flowing. Just like the color blue is in waves.

   Ideation phase
CAD modelling -
Additionally to sketching on paper, we simultaneously modeled our
ideas in Rhino 6 for better visualization of certain shapes.
We chose 3D-Filament-Printing (FDM) as the manufacturing process
as it promised to give us sharp edges and precise fitments of the
upper and lower halves. To achieve such a precise fit, we incorporated
small centering blocks into the bottom part and subtracted that exact
section from the upper parts. We then glued the parts together using
epoxy 2-Component resin.

Sanding and painting -
After sanding down the burrs and filling the printing crevices
with body filler, we followed up with multiple coats of filler, with
sanding between each of them. After a final sanding, we gave
the shape its topcoat with Dupli-Color Platinum RAL 4006.
With the paint dried and the matte clear coat applied, we headed
to the photo studio to take pictures in different orientations.
